The Kingfishers
So strongly in love, Alcyone and Ceyx lovingly called themselves Zeus and Hera. The powerful God’s were furious at this blasphemy, and Zeus struck down Ceyx’s ship with a thunderbolt as he sailed across the sea. Upon discovering the death of her love, the distraught Alcyone walked into the sea and drowned. Hera was so taken by this show of emotion, that Zeus decided to reunite the couple, turning them into kingfisher birds. Calming the sea every year, Alcyone’s father, god of the winds, ensures the birds can once again fly to meet each other and lay eggs.
This small chest of drawers is adorned with the tale. From the outside we see a kingfisher, flying over a ship on the waves. Lifting the egg, a hidden compartment decorated with the wind is revealed to contain the second bird, waiting for the waves to calm, to be reunited with their love.
